Originally the Hound gloves were “Flesh Gloves” for human use before baths or showers were part of everyday life, they were also used for glossing up a horse’s coat.
A product like the modern horsehair glove, at that time called the “Horse-Hair Renovator” was, according to our records, used and recommended by the Prime Minister, Duke of Wellington back in 1825 !!
American John J. Glasson wrote from New York in 1849 –
Sir,- Having been afflicted for the last five years and times confined to my bed for weeks with Rheumatism, I have no hesitation in asserting that the recent improvement on my health is attributable to the use of the PATENT HAIR GLOVES AND STRAP.
Having been under various treatments and the most skilful Physicians, and none having rendered me but partial relief, I had considered my case as incurable; fortunately I am now recovering. I positively declare that I have derived more real benefit from the use of the HAIR RENOVATORS than those to whom I have applied for aid”
